Schematics, boardviews and copyright: our rules

Schematics and boardviews are the most useful documents in board repair, and most of them are not ours, or yours, to share. They are usually the manufacturer’s copyrighted, confidential documents. Forums that host them get takedown notices, and the whole site suffers. So here is where we draw the line.

Not allowed

  • Uploading schematics, boardviews, bitmaps, service manuals or firmware files you don’t have the right to share.
  • Exporting or screenshotting whole diagrams from any paid tool (REFOX Bitmap included) and posting them.
  • Links to where those files can be downloaded (cloud drives, file hosts, chat groups).
  • Requests like “anyone have the schematic for…”. These will be closed.
  • Cracked diagnostic or diagram software, shared accounts, activation codes and dongle cracks.

Allowed

  • Naming the document you are looking at, and the page or the net name: “On the 820-02016 schematic, PPBUS_AON shows 0 V”.
  • Your own measurements, notes and diagrams.
  • Your own photos of a board, annotated as much as you like.
  • A small cropped part of a circuit when it’s needed to discuss a specific fault. Moderators decide what counts as small.
  • Links to official, public documents: manufacturer self-repair manuals, datasheets published by chip makers, iFixit guides.

If you need schematics or boardviews regularly, get a licensed tool or subscription. REWA’s own is REFOX Bitmap (Windows); questions about it go in REFOX Bitmap. It also means you have the correct, current revision.
